Q1 grant recipients

Three charities from Boone, Cary and Wilmington are Civic Local Foundation’s first grant recipients in Q1. Each nonprofit will receive $25,000 to further the great work they are doing in their local communities. The organizations receiving Q1 grants include the Hunger and Health Coalition, the North Carolina Dental Society Foundation, and Welcome Home Angel.

Hunger and Health Coalition in Boone, NC

The Hunger and Health Coalition began as a Christmas wish in 1979. Today, it is a lifeline for residents of Watauga, Avery and Ashe counties dealing with food insecurity and skyrocketing medication costs. The Coalition runs a fresh food pantry market offering boxes of food to families once every two weeks, as well as a food recovery kitchen stocked with donations from local grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants and Appalachian State University. Families visiting the kitchen receive a soup and sandwich or to-go meal for each family member.

Additionally, through the Coalition’s medication assistance program, chronically ill residents at or below 200% of the poverty line can fill certain prescriptions for free.

North Carolina Dental Society Foundation in Cary, NC

The North Carolina Dental Society Foundation works to bring a better quality of life to North Carolinians by providing access to quality dental health care. The Foundation conducts free portable dental clinics over a two-day period in rotating host communities across the state, offering complimentary care for adults from underserved households. The clinics are staffed by volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and other health care professionals and community volunteers.

Dental Society Foundation members also support the national “Give Kids a Smile” event, when dentists volunteer time to help underserved children get the oral health care they need. They also provide a relief fund for dentists suffering financial distress through no fault of their own, and a scholarship program to encourage students in Western North Carolina to enroll in dental hygienist and dental assistant degree programs.

Welcome Home Angel in Wilmington, NC

Welcome Home Angel brings joy and comfort to families with children who have life-altering conditions or injuries by providing bedroom makeovers that give them more cheerful, accessible living spaces. Families approved for assistance are assigned a design team that develops a work plan for the makeover, which the family reviews and approves before renovations begin. After construction is complete, families and children get a Big Reveal Day to show off their new rooms. Welcome Home Angel serves families in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.
